The Spots

by carolynholm

Hey Mom,
Charlie keeps sitting in my Spot.
Winston

Dear Winston,
Which spot is that?
Love, Carolyn

Mom,
When you sit in your Spot, your lap is my Spot.
Winston

Dear Winston,
I have a Spot?
Love, Carolyn

Hey Mom,
Of course you do!!!
Winston

Dear Winston
Where is this Spot?
Love, Carolyn

Mom,
Where you sit and read in the evening. You always sit in the same place.
Winston

Dear Winston
That’s because the good reading lamp is right there.
Love, Carolyn

Mom,
And that’s my Spot.
Winston

Dear Winston,
The sofa is for all of us.
Love, Carolyn

Mom,
The lap. I’m talking about your lap.
Winston

Dear Winston,
Ok, I get it. But I just want to point out that Charlie defers to you when my lap looks available. If you are already on my lap he finds another place to curl up. But if you are simply nearby, he hesitates before he hops on.
Love, Carolyn

Mom,
He defers to me?
Winston

Dear Winston,
Yes, as amazing as it sounds, you, Winston, are the Senior Cat.
Love, Carolyn

Mom,
Puffin is the Senior Cat.
Winston

Dear Winston,
He was, but now that he’s gone, you are. Unbelievable. I never thought I’d say Senior Cat and Winston in the same breath.
Love, Carolyn

Mom,
Is that sarcasm?
Winston

Dear Winston,
Possibly.
Love, Carolyn

Hey Mom,
I can’t always tell.
Winston

Dear Winston,
You have other Spots. There’s the comfy cat bed in the dining room window. And of course,  there’s your Breakfast Spot.
Love, Carolyn

Mom,
There are TWO Breakfast Spots! One is the kitchen chair, for breakfast treats! Breakfast Time is Treat Time!!!!
Winston

Dear Winston,
We do have a tradition of baksheesh at the breakfast table, don’t we! It started with Mia, the cat who died in 2020. That left us with an opening for a cat, and we found you.
Love, Carolyn

Mom,
That’s why you call that chair Mia’s Chair.
Winston

Dear Winston
It was her Spot.
Love, Carolyn

Hey Mom,
Now it’s my Spot. And the other Breakfast Spot is your lap. And your shoulder.
Winston

Dear Winston,
You’re very sweet when you climb up to purr in my ear.
Love, Carolyn

Mom,
Actually I’m mostly looking out the window behind you.
Winston

Dear Winston,
I suspected that. But still, it’s a nice way to share my Spot with you.
Love, Carolyn

Hey Mom,
The house is FULL of Spots. Charlie’s Spot is the top of the Cat Tree. Elsa’s Spot is under your bed. And Poppy has two Spots. Her bed under the coffee table and her bed in the bedroom.  Depending on where you are.
Winston

Dear Winston,
We all have our Spots, don’t we!
Love, Carolyn

Hey Mom,
But Charlie thinks all the Spots are his. He sits in my spot. He sits in your sofa spot when you get up and go in the kitchen. And he loves to stretch out in Poppy’s bed. Poppy doesn’t know what to make of that.
Winston

Dear Winston,
Charlie gets away with murder, doesn’t he!
Love, Carolyn

Mom!
What are you SAYING???!!!!!!!!!!!!
Winston

Dear Winston,
Calm down, it’s a human expression. It just means Charlie does whatever he wants, and he’s so darn friendly and likeable that everyone lets him.
Love, Carolyn
